Arts Forum to Air on Cable Access

Video from last July's MetLife Arts Forum will be broadcast on Portland Cable Access (Comcast channel 30) on Sept. 30 at 6pm, Oct. 3 at 6:30pm, Oct. 9 at 9am, Oct. 13 at 6pm, and Oct. 19 at 2pm.

During the two-hour discussion, 65 corporate executives, arts administrators, and civic leaders discussed the connection between arts and business; exploring the idea that the nonprofit arts community, the creative industries and the business community in Portland have economic issues and concerns in common.

To find out more about the conversation that took place, you can dowload these transcript excerpts Download file; view the Creative Community Tree produced by Philip Iosca of Wieden+Kennedy 12 Download file; and check out a summary of the 5 main themes that emerged Download file.

A follow-up Forum will take place on November 8 and will facilitate the creation of policies and action steps that solve local issues collaboratively; identifying a role for arts, the creative sector, business, and government in the solution. Invitations will be sent out on October 12. Email sgummere@racc.org if you'd like to be included.

As we prepare for the November 8 forum, we are working to collect extraordinary examples of where arts, business and innovation are coming together with exciting results. Do you know of examples of creative partnerships like these, either locally or nationally? Blog about it!

Thanks to everyone who attended and participated in the Arts Forum this morning at Ecotrust. We hope you found the conversation as stimulating and inspirational as we did.

A special thanks to our moderator, Thom Walters, and our presenters, Joe Cortright, Don Rood, Chris Coleman, and Bart Eberwein. Thanks to Portland Community Media, for helping us record today’s discussion, and to Moto Interactive for helping us keep the conversation going on the blog.

So many interesting questions were raised today including,
What is the story we carry around about art and business?
What promotes the intersection of business and creative?
How can arts nonprofits and businesses change the way they communicate with one another?
What do all businesses, for profit and non-profit, have in common?

And a challenge was presented, to re-examine the way you think, and talk, about your role in your industry and community.

A full transcript of the Forum and other materials made available today will be posted on the blog soon so stay tuned...
and keep blogging!

Here are the first five questions that will be posed at the July 28th Forum. Hopefully the questions and the topic statement will inspire you to put on your innovation hats and start blogging.

1. What business are you in?

2. Which companies or industries do you consider peers or partners with your organization or industry?

3. How do you define innovation?

4. What types of innovations are needed in your business or industry?

5. What are three things that businesses outside the creative sector (banks, law, accounting, insurance, etc.) have in common with nonprofit arts and culture organizations?

Presented by the Regional Arts & Culture Council and
Northwest Business for Culture and the Arts

Welcome to the Arts Forum blog; a space to respond to the forum topic and continue the conversation to be held on July 28th at the Arts Forum event at Ecotrust.

We truly regret that we can’t accommodate everyone who wants to attend the Arts Forum event. We hope those who are not able to attend will participate in the dialogue here. We welcome your input.

A white paper will be published that highlights key points and adds some analysis of the discussion. We’ll post the highlights here and let you know where to get a copy of the white paper, as well as a full transcript of the Forum.

The Arts Forum will explore the idea that the arts community and the business community in Portland have many economic issues and opportunities in common. By identifying these common concerns and bringing innovative thinking to the planning table, we can help put a sustainable Regional plan in place that maintains the region’s vibrancy, and makes people and businesses want to locate and invest in this region.
